Jamie - The Best Coast

It`s the usual story. Bright young person gets a university degree then leaves Atlantic Canada for a good job in Western Canada, where they miss their families, the ocean and affordable housing. But the rapid growth in Saint John is writing a new ending to this familiar tale. For Jamie Robinson, moving to Saint John wasn`t just good, it was phenomenal.

When Jamie Robinson left Atlantic Canada after earning his engineering degree, he wasn`t sure he would ever return. "You always wish the chance was there to come back," says the native of York Harbour, Newfoundland. "But it was only in the past few years that I saw so much activity in Saint John and realized the opportunities were there."

So after 8 years working in Western Canada, most recently in Winnipeg, Jamie and his family found a new life in Saint John.

Jamie is a Process and Quality Control Manager for Atlantic Wallboard, an innovative company creating wallboard from 100% recycled materials and one of the many new advanced manufacturing additions to the Saint John scene. Jamie has found an exciting career with an outstanding quality of life to match.

With a new baby, Jamie and his wife Samantha wanted to find the best place to raise her. "You may not hear much about New Brunswick when you`re out West, but what you do hear is stellar," he says from the comfort of his office in Saint John`s new Irving Green Industrial Park. "And it`s truly phenomenal how friendly the people are."

Samantha is a native of Vancouver and the couple considered a move to the West Coast. But with a decent home running in the neighborhood of $1 million in Vancouver, Saint John`s supply of affordable, family homes, most a short commute from the city centre, helped make the case for the other coast. "There is no comparison when it comes to housing. It`s amazing, your dollar goes that much further here," notes Jamie.

"Saint John has the perfect mix of what we were looking for. We love it here."
