Smart & Connected
Smart Communities
The size of our region and province allows us to be highly connected, collaborative and innovative. There are a number of projects taking place in the Greater Saint John region and across the province that are looking at how we can use smart technologies and concepts to improve the way we live in New Brunswick.
Smart & Connected Community Data Project-Harnessing the Power of Data
Enterprise Saint John, the economic development agency for the region has secured a 3-year project that will harness the power of data by using connected technologies to collect public and organizational data. That data will be collected and added to a data platform where researchers and innovators will analyze the data and look for trends, patterns and opportunities. Those insights will help municipalities, organizations & businesses find new opportunities that could help them find exportable ideas, save money or grow.
Smart Cities Challenge
City of Saint John recently submitted its bid for Infrastructure Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge. A challenge that would see two communities with a population of 500,000 or less be chosen to solve its toughest community challenge and given $10 million in federal funding to do it. On Friday, June 1, the top 20 finalists for the Smart Cities Challenge were announced. We would like to congratulate the City of Fredericton and St. Mary’s First Nation for their successful Smart Cities Challenge submission. They were one of two proposals from Atlantic Canada to advance to the next phase of the competition. Although Saint John did not advance to Phase 2, we will be moving ahead with plans to address population decline in our City. Cybersecurity
CyberSecurityNB
New Brunswick wants to lead the way in cybersecurity in Canada and CyberNB wants to be a hub for this rapidly growing field. To achieve this, a strategy is building upon an existing system of innovation that will create cybersecurity-related jobs, international collaboration, and a new incubator that would nurture start-ups and tech development in cybersecurity. CyberNB is a special Operating Agency of Opportunities NB.
